What kind of computer tools do I need to build my computer safely and efficiently?

There are several tools that you should have when building, repairing or working on your computer.

Before starting, you must have the proper set of tools.

Here are my recommendations for some PC repair tools:

  • Anti-static wrist band
  • Screwdrivers - Phillips and slotted(Non-Magnetic)
  • Parts/Screw Retriever
  • Socket Drivers
  • Pliers
  • Tweezers
  • Flashlight

Anti-static Wrist Band:
This is worn during assembly to protect your delicate computer components from damage due to static electricity. Click here to read about Static Electricity and here to view an antistatic wrist strap.

Screwdrivers:
These computer tools are the most important tools that you will have. You will need slotted and Phillips screwdrivers. All your computer parts will need to be secured to your system with screws.

You will also need it to open your computer case. Never use a magnetized screwdriver since magnetized items could damage circuits or drives inside your computer.

Caution: You should not use an electric screwdriver when repairing your computer, since they tend to over-tighten screws.

Parts/Screw Retriever:
This will be handy to retrieve screws or parts that have fallen into difficult places.

Socket Drivers:
To be used with the hex screws since, if you use a screwdriver, it could slip and damage the motherboard traces.

Pliers:
You need to have one when building/ugrading/working on your own computer. It will be very handy to use if a screw falls into tight spaces within the computer.

You can use a small set of pliers or a sturdy pair of tweezers to adjust the jumpers on a system board or on a device such as a hard drive. The thin, long nose pliers are the best to buy.

Tweezers:
Tweezers will be very helpful when working in hard to reach areas within your computer case.

Compressed Air:
Use a can of compressed air to blow dust and dirt from inside your computer case. This can help to make the components easier to see and work with when building your computer.

Flashlight:
You can use a flashlight to illuminate the inside of a computer case. This will make it easier to see components while building your computer.

Chip Remover:
A chip remover is a device that you can use when building your computer to remove a chip from its socket on a circuit board. A chip remover is often referred to as a 'chip extractor' or 'chip puller'.

Parts Container:
To put your screws and parts in.

Zip Ties:
Zip ties will organize cables together effectively which promotes a neat appearance. Ties also enables better airflow through your computer case.

Conclusion

Working with your computer tools will make it easier to build your own cheap computer.
